However, with new features like the second layer we’re finding lots of surprising new ways we can make random level design even more interesting.Īs I said before, it feels like there’s a new dimension to it. Spelunky 2 will have very strong themes of family and friendship and I want new players to feel cared for even as we put tough obstacles in their way.Īre the levels randomised? That’s super hard to do what was the approach?ĭY: The approach is the same as with Spelunky 1 where we generate a “safe” path to the exit using room templates. Spelunky is still Spelunky and it will be very challenging – my hope is that new players will want to persevere because we made the effort worth it. But my philosophy has always been to attract new players by making the world more interesting and inviting, instead of focusing on tutorials and things like that. I’m still very much thinking about new players, though. And then there are all the expected new areas, items, monsters and traps. We’ve also added liquid physics that are really fun to play with – combined with the destructible terrain you get things like dynamic water or lavafalls that you have to deal with on each run. Sometimes the entrance is right there and sometimes it’s a hidden shortcut.Įven though the gameplay is still 2D platforming, this adds a feeling of a third dimension to the exploration. For example, each level will have a second layer that you can go back and forth between. There are a lot of differences that, when added up, really make the game feel different. Now that they get it, we can spend more time making the experience deeper and richer. Which is great, because with Spelunky 1 we had a hard time explaining that to people. What will Spelunky fans “get” about the game right away? What’s similar, what’s different?ĭY: I think they’ll immediately get into the flow of playing the game. Sometimes that means adding, sometimes that means remixing – it can also mean subverting expectations created by the original game. The big question on my mind was “What makes Spelunky, Spelunky?” I wanted to figure out what those ideas were and take them to their limit without anything getting in their way. My opinion about sequels is that they are extensions of the previous games, so I want fans of Spelunky 1 to jump in and feel like they’re playing a continuation, both storywise and mechanically. I understand this game is very, very different from Spelunky 1 – why? What guided that decision?ĭY: At its core, Spelunky 2 is not too different, actually. And that includes storytelling (both developer-created and player-created) as well as game mechanics. That’s something we’ve been building on – not just adding lots of new things (which we’re doing!), but also making the world feel even more interconnected. Since Spelunky was released a lot of great roguelike-inspired games have come out and pushed the genre in cool new directions, but I think Spelunky is still very unique in terms of the freedom it offers the player and the way different elements interact, where one event can trigger a cascade of consequences that have to be dealt with. So, first things first: What is Spelunky 2?ĭerek Yu: Spelunky 2 is the sequel to the roguelike platformer Spelunky and takes place after the events of the original game. We caught up with Derek Yu, creator of Spelunky, to learn more about what’s in store when Spelunky 2 launches sometime next year. Rideable mounts! Online multiplayer! And a lush visual overhaul that retains the simple beauty of Spelunky while adding in visual flourishes like gloopy new liquid effects and particles out the wazoo. It’s a remarkably hard act to follow, but it looks like Mossmouth and Blitworks are bringing out the big guns. If you never played the original Spelunky, you missed one of the greatest platform games of all time. Oh, wonder of wonders: Our first look at Spelunky 2 gameplay has arrived! And you can play it this weekend in the PlayStation booth at PAX West!

This additional information can lead them to attribute their behaviour to external factors more readily than observers who lack the same level of information. They may have insights into their thoughts, feelings, intentions, and external circumstances that are not readily available to observers. When explaining their behaviour, individuals often prefer attributing it to external factors to avoid taking personal responsibility or appearing flawed or incompetent.Īs actors, individuals can access more detailed information about the situational factors influencing their behaviour. People naturally tend to protect their self-image and maintain a positive view of themselves. The following are some basic causes of the actor-observer bias: The bias can lead to misunderstandings, miscommunication, and conflicts if individuals need to recognise and account for the bias in their attributions. Moreover, actors may consider these factors more extensively, leading to different attributions than observers with limited information.Īctor-observer bias can affect interpersonal relationships by influencing how individuals perceive and interpret each other’s behaviour. The bias is driven by cognitive processes involved in attribution, including salience, consistency, distinctiveness, and consensus. They consider the circumstances, constraints, and environmental influences contributing to their actions, leading to situational attribution bias. This tendency helps maintain a positive self-image and protect self-esteem.Īctors are more likely to attribute their behaviour to external situational factors. The bias often involves self-serving attributions, where individuals tend to attribute their own positive behaviour to internal, dispositional factors while negative behaviour to external, situational factors. Observers, on the other hand, lack this intimate knowledge and rely primarily on observable behaviour. Actors can access their thoughts, feelings, and situational context, shaping their understanding of their behaviour. The bias arises due to the difference in perspectives between the actor and the observer. The following are some of the characteristics of actor-observer bias: On the minimum spec - roughly the double. With all routes installed the simulator again has to run through the routes and it took around 40 seconds before ships appears again now in new positions according to new time of the day. Reducing the number of routes to 370 - that is North West Europe & Baltic routes only for a test flying out of Calais - the high end computer saw less than 10 seconds additional load time compared to no AI Ship traffic the low end PC slightly more but still not something really noticeable.Ĭhanging time in the simulation means that the sim again has to check which ships are close and should be displayed, so it recalculates again. This is due to the fact that it is 24.000 ship movements passing at least 250.000 way points which are being calculated… So load time is impacted. The minimum spec computer spent 120 seconds more in the startup. The sim will start loading AI traffic routes once the departure airport, plane etc has been selected and you enter the flight:Ĭompared with a situation with no AI ship traffic the high end computer spent 40-50 seconds more when it had to read the full package with all 2000 routes installed. Let’s start with the initial load time for the sim: This is not a professional technical test, but rather an observation to see if there are differences and things which can be done to optimize. One just meeting the minimum spec for MSFS and the other a high end gaming computer with GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, Ryzen 9 3900X, 4x8GB 3200MHz DDR4, 1TB SSD. Also users have different criteria when flying: some focus on the accuracy of systems and others spend the time looking out the windows to see the scenery etc… Add to that different levels of patience…īut in order to come with some recommendations for optimization I have been running tests together with one of the Beta testers, Knud, on two completely different computers. No two computers and settings are the same, so users will experience differences. While most users seems to be quite happy with performance some have reported issues: Some speculate the total cost of development and marketing for GTA 6 could be in the $2bn (£1.6bn) range. Of course, the price tag went on to be plenty worth it, accounting for that $8bn it's made since.įor as expensive as Grand Theft Auto V was to create, game-industry analysts are betting that Rockstar Games is going in even bigger this time around. At the time of its development, GTA 5 was one of the most expensive games ever made, with a budget of $265m (£212m). Now, this is more the norm, with nearly all major games built within a free-form, open world – but at the time, GTA's approach was a huge innovation.Ĭreating this ground-breaking type of game has been expensive for Rockstar Games. Rather than following a linear storyline or trajectory, players could spend hours simply wandering around and exploring the world within the game. Those improvements were on display with GTA 3's innovative and ground-breaking game-play, which propelled it from a novelty to an absolute must play. Video-game development grew by leaps and bounds from the late 90s through the early 2000s. It's so large and so varied that even fractions of it are larger than whole parallel industries like movies."Įxperts identify the release of 2001's Grand Theft Auto III as a turning point for the game's massive popularity. "The games industry is simply massive globally, and is no single genre or platform. If it maintains the same slice of the pie, it's going to be big, because it will come from a bigger pie," he says. "The brand is as strong or stronger than it was before, but additionally the game industry is larger. This overall global industry growth stands to boost GTA 6's revenue potential once it hits the market, says Williams. HBO's The Last of Us series (based on the 2013 Sony game) pulled in more than 4.7 million viewers for its premiere alone while the Super Mario Brothers Movie grossed $1.36bn (£1.08bn) worldwide, in addition to scoring three Golden Globe nominations – boosting Nintendo's profits to more than $1bn (£800m) for 2023. The film and television industries have also cashed in on gaming's cult fandom through licensing. The popularity of esports and free-to-play games that generate massive revenue through in-game purchases and licensing partnerships plays a big role in the astounding financial footprint as has the introduction of other blockbuster titles, which have also broadened the market. By the end of 2023, experts project revenues to reach $250bn (£199bn). The value of the video game industry is staggering. Yet despite this extremely high bar, Dmitri Williams, a gaming business expert and professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communications, in California, expects the new release to perform even better. Grand Theft Auto V holds claim to the best opening week sales in video-game history, earning $1.15bn (£1.2bn) in just five days. All told, the franchise has earned more than $8bn (£6.4bn) since 2008.Įxpectations are high for GTA 6, not only for its graphics and playability, but also for its business potential. These figures include sales of the game across multiple platforms and consoles, remastered re-releases and in-game purchases. This year, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 190 million copies as of September 2023, bringing the whole franchise up to 410 million units sold and a net revenue of $781m (£623m). GTA is already a wildly financially successful franchise. The teaser got huge views, dominated conversation and signalled what could be a massive pay-out for Rockstar Games as well as the companies the enable game-play, such as hardware developers and retailers. When the long-anticipated first GTA 6 trailer leaked online in early December, the surge of excitement forced developer Rockstar Games to release the official version of the trailer earlier than planned (with the game seemingly headed for a 2025 release, the prevailing notion was that fans wouldn't get that sneak peek until sometime in 2024 at the earliest). Regardless of whether you feel the game represents the worst of digital humanity, or herald its bold creativity and innovation, GTA is a pop-culture force nearly impossible to ignore. It's the first release of the game since 2013 – and to call it "wildly anticipated" in its community is a great understatement. This subject of both controversy and culture – Grand Theft Auto – is expected to make its return in 2025 with Grand Theft Auto VI, widely known as GTA 6. It's also spawned memes and a singular cult fandom. Its violence and vehicular mayhem has drawn the ire of organisations including the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the UK's Freedom from Torture organisation. It's been condemned by Britain, Germany and France. Microsoft can also be a great graphic design software that you can use in making your graduation, thanksgiving, or wedding place cards. It is defined as the quantity of visible light that is emitted by a source in a unit time per unit solid angle. In the SI unit system, luminous intensity is represented as candela (cd). The luminosity function provides a standardized model to determine the sensitivity level of the human eye. Luminous intensity can be used as a factor to determine the quantify the power emitted by any light source in a particular direction for a given unit solid angle. The quantities employed to express luminous intensity are obvious to most non-scientists.Ī steradian is the standard unit of the solid angle a sphere encloses 4 p, which is approximately equal to 12.57 steradians. Here, A frequency of 540 THz corresponds to a wavelength of about 555 nanometers (nm), which is in the middle of the visible light spectrum and is usually accepted and the human eye is sensitive to this wavelength. Luminous intensity is an expression that describes the amount of light power emitting from a point source within a solid angle of one steradian.įor instance, a frequency of 540 terahertz, i.e., 540 THz or 5.40 x 10 14 Hz is specified. In this article, we will learn about the following topics in detail: The SI unit of luminous intensity is the candela or cd, it is an SI base unit. It is based on the luminosity function, a standard model of the sensitivity of the human eye. Luminous Intensity is a measure of the wavelength-weighted power radiated by a light source in a particular direction per unit solid angle. |
